How to Divide Fractions

Knowing how to divide fractions can be helpful when going to be working with them directly. It is not too difficult in terms of understanding how it works but can be challenging if not patient enough. There isn’t much in the way of requirements and some tips. Doing it with smaller numbers will make the transition to larger numbers much easier because of having the basics down to a science.

Introduction

Knowing how to divide fractions can be helpful when going to be working with them directly.  It is not too difficult in terms of understanding how it works but can be challenging if not patient enough.  There isn’t much in the way of requirements and some tips.  Doing it with smaller numbers will make the transition to larger numbers much easier because of having the basics down to a science.

Requirements

#1: An understanding of how to work with fractions is going to be necessary.

#2: Knowing the basic Math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) will be needed.

#3: Speaking of multiplication make sure to know how to do that when dividing fractions.

#4: Having a mind that is willing to learn because you cannot learn if you’re not willing.

Tips

#1: To simplify the fractions making the number smaller before solving it, see if the denominator on one fraction and the numerator on the second have anything in common.  Reduce it down to its lowest terms.

#2: Only use a calculator if checking your work.  If in school it is not allowed, do not do so.

How to divide fractions

#1: The first step is to write out the problem if one is not provided.  Use small numbers as a way of understanding it from top to bottom.

#2: The second fraction needs to be inverted.  That means switching the numerator and denominator and the problem is rewritten as a multiplication problem.

#3: If there is a chance to simply the problem, then do so.  Check the denominator and numerator of both fractions to see if they have a common number both go in.

#3: Multiply straight through and that will be the answer.

#4: Double check your work.  If there are mistakes, proceed to the next step.  Otherwise, just go to the last step.

#5: Just simply look at your work and try again.

#6: Proceed to the next problem until you’re finished.

Conclusion

The difficulty in completing the steps is that it is easy to understand.  Dividing fractions is not an extremely difficult process but can be time consuming depending on the problems.  As time goes on, there will be more difficult problems in the future.  If the numbers are getting larger, it will not be too much of an issue.  If you all ready know how to go about working with smaller numbers as fractions, it will be no different with larger numbers.
